The Power to Make a Difference
Having lived only 18 years of life may not seem like a lot. However, throughout those years I’ve had experiences that have helped me grow into the person I am today and will certainly continue to make an impact in my everyday life.
My name is Leslie Cuero and for 2 years I was a Youth To Youth leader for Right To Play at Runnymede Collegiate Institute. Today, I am starting my second year of Massage Therapy at Humber College where I continue to use the communication, time management, and decision-making skills I have gained from Right To Play to grow as a leader. Right To Play for me was an unforgettable experience where I had the opportunity to learn more about myself and the ability that we as young adults have to impact the lives of others. It allowed me to discover a passion I have within me for instructing, and a voice that is capable of taking the lead. Through Right To Play, I have improved my ability to communicate effectively with my peers, speak in front of a crowd, organize my time wisely, and work alongside other personalities that are different than my own. Most importantly, being in this program has taught me how to support my classmates when they are in need. When I look back at my High School years, one of the first thoughts that comes to my mind are the friendships, laughter and memories I have gained through the program. I am personally forever grateful for all that Right To Play has offered to Runnymede and myself. As an alumnus, I can guarantee that every Youth Leader will be able to benefit from the skills, experiences and friendships they will obtain from this program.
"Once you are part of the Right To Play family you are always welcome with open arms.”
Once you are part of the Right To Play family you are always welcome with open arms. I personally got the chance to go back to a Right To Play session at George Syme Community School and volunteered at the 2019 Annual Youth To Youth Symposium. It never ceases to amaze me how much the Runnymede Youth Leaders have grown and how many zealous children are taking the lead in their schools.
To all the Youth Leaders out there, I want to congratulate you and your mentors for all the hard work you do. Perhaps not everyone in the world can see the impact you are making at your schools, but your time, effort and hard work does not go unnoticed. It is found in every smile, hug, every successful session and “thank you” you receive. It may sometimes get hard and you may even wonder why you’re still a Youth To Youth leader, but my advice is to remember how much you have grown and how much value a single smile can carry. Look at every opportunity as a chance to better yourself and your community. You are powerful, and I hope you never forget that. For all youth out there who are wondering why they should become Youth Leaders, know that this is an opportunity for you to have fun, grow as a leader and make a difference. There is no better feeling than giving our best to others and Right To Play makes that possible.
